Stonewall responds to the Pride flag being reinstated at the Stonewall National Monument in New York City.

Two months after removing the Pride flag from the Stonewall national monument in New York City, Trump’s administration has agreed in court to it being reinstating within a week.

Responding to the news, the UK LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall CEO Simon Blake OBE said:

We are delighted that the Trump administration is reinstating the Pride flag at the Stonewall national monument. The Pride rainbow flag is the brightest symbol of the LGBTQ+ community’s campaign for equal rights over the last 50+ years. It is a symbol of courage, unity and hope in the face of discrimination, and of our commitment to create a safe and equal world for all LGBTQ+ people to live, work and thrive.

In recent times we have seen the serious impact that either flying a flag or removing a flag can have – flags tell stories about who is welcome and who is not. For the LGBTQ+ community, removing the Pride flag sends a message that we are not welcome to live proudly as ourselves.

In this time of turbulence, we are constantly reminded that hard-won rights must be continually defended. We will continue to work with our US partners to advocate for the rights of all LGBTQ+ people affected by prejudice and discrimination however it manifests.
