How we change the law

Stonewall was formed with a specific aim: to abolish the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation known as ‘Section 28’ that prevented young people learning about homosexuality in schools. It took twelve years in Scotland and 14 years in England and Wales to overturn this law. 

Since then, and alongside that work, Stonewall has played a very significant and important role in changing the law to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people. Our advocacy work – influencing legislation and shaping government policy – is central to everything we do and all we have achieved.
