Stonewall responds to the UK dropping six places in this year's ILGA rankings

Published May 14, 2025

The ILGA-Europe Rainbow Map ranks the legal and policy landscape for LGBTQ+ people across Europe. The latest rankings reveal the UK has dropped to an all-time low position of 22 out of 49.

Responding to this news, a Stonewall spokesperson said:

"These rankings should be a wake-up call for the British government. Dropping six places on the Rainbow Map during a global rollback of LGBTQ+ rights undermines our position on the global stage. No country can afford to be on autopilot during these turbulent times.

"The UK has reached an all-time low position of 22 out of 49. Warm words and empty promises from the Government won't restore the UK’s global reputation on LGBTQ+ rights. Action will.

"Stonewall stands ready to work with policy makers to deliver on the promises the Government has already made, including banning conversion practices and making LGBTQ+ hate crime an aggravated offence."
