Stonewall issues joint statement with LGBT Foundation on NHS guidance on delivering same-sex accommodation
"NHS England has published guidance today about same-sex hospital ward accommodation and staff facilities access.
"These updates will determine how patients and staff should use same-sex spaces such as changing rooms, bathrooms, inpatient wards and recovery areas.
"We welcome NHS England's emphasis on clinical priority to determine where patients should receive care, as stated in the new guidance: ‘Ensuring that an individual’s clinical needs are being met must take priority alongside ensuring that where an individual is accommodated does not negatively impact on patient safety and outcomes.’
"However, putting the emphasis on individuals, and placing the burden on local healthcare decision makers to determine staff resource, support and processes locally will inevitably result in inconsistent care for trans+ and non-binary people across the country.
"We know that 34% of trans people already avoid healthcare for fear of discrimination; this figure is likely to rise as trans+ and non-binary people fear they will not be cared for within their affirmed gender.
"We encourage medical professionals to meaningfully consult with patients when deciding where patients should be housed.
"All of us rely on hospitals and NHS care in the most vulnerable, frightening moments of our lives. No one should experience worse treatment because of their gender identity or expression or made to feel afraid or embarrassed when they are in greatest need of protection.
"The NHS Constitution is clear: the NHS must provide a compassionate, respectful and comprehensive service, available to all.
"Looking to the future, the medical professionals expected to make these difficult decisions should have access to high-quality LGBTQ+ inclusion training.
"Yet again, the Supreme Court ruling and associated guidance is creating an untenable situation for trans+ and non-binary people, but we continue in our efforts to advocate for legislative changes which will reinstate dignity, equality and safety for all."
