Equality Act 2010

Stonewall has produced a simple, short plain-English guide to the Equality Act 2010. It tells employers and service providers exactly what they need to know and do to ensure they are complying with the Act in their workplaces and when providing services.

Stonewall played a major part in lobbying for provisions in the Act, including the public sector Equality Duty and the lifting of the ban on religious organisations celebrating civil partnerships on religious premises.

The public sector Equality Duty

The Act has created a single public sector Equality Duty, known as 'the duty', covering sexual orientation for the first time. It replaces the previous public duties covering gender, disability and race. The new duty requires public bodies to consider the needs of their gay service-users in the design and delivery of public services.

Stonewall's guide includes specific information relevant to different public services on how they can comply with the duty. The one-page sections - free to download below -give public bodies the key evidence they need about the experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people using their services or in their workplaces. They also provide sample equality objectives for public bodies to amend and set themselves.
