What is the situation for LBT+ communities in Uganda?

In Uganda, there is widespread homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. The country does not recognise LBT+ people in programmes – in access to health – which we find a challenge. There's no data that's capturing anything about LBT+ women. So, I believe this project is going to be useful for us in doing our research and capturing that data. We will have evidence and also advocacy tools in the future for LBT+ women in Uganda.

What change do you hope to see?

The change I want to see is the recognition of LBT+ women within the government but also within the broader mainstream women's movement as women. I think this research will be used as a platform also during different campaigns. We shall be talking about this project. I think it's useful.

How have you found the Expert Group Planning Meeting and collaborating with Stonewall?

It's been a massive support. It's been a good experience meeting people from different continents and learning different ideas and extending knowledge. It's been powerful because I learned a lot of things about the UN mechanisms. This has been an eye opener. I believe that, for the next UN Universal Periodic Review, I'll be able to participate and report back and give feedback on LBT+ people in Uganda.
