How you can support LGBTQ+ Ukrainians

The situation in Ukraine following the Russian invasion is extremely concerning for all citizens – but we know members of the LGBTQ+ community will feel at particular risk.

The invasion was ordered by President Putin, whose regime is extremely anti-LGBTQ+.

Over the last twenty years, Putin has repeatedly attacked the LGBTQ+ community. A law passed in 2013 made it illegal to promote gay rights, resulting in activists being jailed and LGBTQ+ support groups being shut down. Last year, the Council of Europe described several years of ‘extensive and often virulent attacks on the rights of LGBTI people’ in Russia, and found that anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech by politicians and in the media had risen significantly.

Amid escalating violence, LGBTQ+ people in Ukraine are now facing the additional fear of persecution just for being themselves. Many are having to flee their homeland in search of safety and freedom.

At Stonewall, we’re working with partner LGBTQ+ organisations in the region and here in the UK. We’re supporting LGBTQ+ Ukrainian refugees to access the Government’s three-year visa scheme, as well as lobbying the UK Government to protect LGBTQ+ human rights defenders in Ukraine.

We’ve pulled together this list of ways you can help LGBTQ+ Ukrainians here in the UK:

Help LGBTQ+ Ukrainians find a home

  • If you live in an urban area, have a spare room and are willing to host for a minimum of 3-6 months, you can sign up with Refugees at Home. Please mark STONEWALL in the ‘Where did you hear about us?’ box.
  • If you don’t meet the above criteria, you can sign up with The No Accommodation Network.
  • You can also volunteer as a Qualified Home Visitor for Refugees at Home – you will need to be a professional who does home visits as part of your day job. By volunteering, you’ll help Refugees at Home to assess more hosts and offer safe homes to more refugees, including LGBTQ+ Ukrainians.

At Stonewall, we’re referring LGBTQ+ Ukrainians to trusted LGBTQ-inclusive support organisations. You can help LGBTQ+ Ukrainians find a home in the UK by emailing

Donate to LGBTQ+ organisations

Our friends at ILGA Europe have a list of LGBTQ+ organisations in the region who are working to support LGBTQ+ Ukrainians, and are accepting direct donations.

If you’re in the UK, you can also give to the following charities:

  • Donate to GiveOut – supporting OutRight Action International’s appeal supporting the LGBTQI community in Ukraine.
  • Donate to Refugees at Home – connecting people with a spare room to refugees and asylum seekers in need.
  • Donate to Micro Rainbow – providing safe housing, employment, training and education support as well as social inclusion support to LGBTQI asylum seekers and refugees.
  • Donate to Ty Ne Odyn – a Ukrainian public organisation advocating for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in the city of Zhytomyr.
  • Donate to Stonewall – we’re advocating for protection for LGBTQ+ human rights defenders, ensuring LGBTQ+ Ukrainians can find safe, inclusive support in the UK, linking LGBTQ+ organisations in the region and our partners in the UK.

We do this work because we imagine a world where LGBTQ+ people everywhere are free to live their lives to the full. Help us build that world.
