Top honour for Stonewall Chair

David Isaac made CBE in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Stonewall today welcomed the award of the CBE to the charity’s Chair, David Isaac. The appointment, as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, is in recognition of many years of voluntary service.

David, Stonewall Chair since 2003, is also Chair of Modern Art Oxford and a trustee of the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. He said: ‘I’m absolutely delighted that the work of Stonewall has been marked in this way. All the charity’s successes in recent years have resulted from the efforts of tens of thousands of supporters and hundreds of volunteers and staff. I’m honoured to have been able to play a part in that.’

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said: ‘David has made a huge contribution to the direction of Stonewall in recent years and has helped transform our organisational and financial stability. This honour is a fitting tribute to someone who has done many years of voluntary work in a range of areas. All our staff and volunteers are delighted for David and his partner, Paul.’

Background:
1. Stonewall trustees, in line with charity best practice, are recruited in open competition after a ‘skills audit’ of the existing board. A new round of trustee recruitment will take place later this year.

2. In 2003, Stonewall had 13 permanent staff engaged mainly in parliamentary lobbying. In 2011, the charity has 60 permanent staff. Its pioneering Education for All programme, tackling homophobic bullying in schools, is supported by a coalition of 70 organisations. Its Diversity Champions workplace programme has 620 members employing more than five million people between them and is the largest non-governmental intervention of its kind in the world.
