Course objectives

  • Identify your role in keeping LGBTQ+ young people safe, and free from stigma and discrimination
  • Consider how LGBTQ+ inclusive practice and resilience can be embedded across your service
  • Consider how the intersections of LGBTQ+ identity, race and disability can affect risk and protective factors for positive mental health
  • Explore the importance of relationships and what LGBTQ+ young people say works in helping to support their mental health and build their resilience

I believe I have learned such a lot of valuable information, not just about mental health , but about our young people and the problems they face from all aspects of society . The need for resilience and education is real. This would definitely help my colleagues and support CPD. I feel I have been on a personal journey by completing this course and I am a better person for it too.

I feel the content of this course has been very thorough in highlighting the difficulties that LGBT CYP can and often do face. It has built on my prior knowledge and made me question and analyse past and current practices.

I am already an experienced youth worker and am confident in my abilities to support young people. It was very useful to update my skills and ensure I can hone them to help LGBT young people. It has also raised my awareness of the prevalence of mental health issues in this group and I will therefore be proactive about tackling this issue. Most helpful were mental health stats for LGBT young people and tips on how to overcome the challenges of supporting LGBT young people.
