  • Hannah Gadsby stuns audience with secret appearance at comedy night fundraiser for LGBT charity Stonewall

  • Nanette startreats audience to a special 15-minute set

  • Suzi Ruffell hosts rip-roaring evening of the very best of the UK’s lesbian, bi and trans comedians, sponsored by DIVA Magazine

Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby surprised 400 people at Stonewall’s Stand Up Sessions event in London on Monday, 21 October.

Towards the end of the evening, compere Suzi Ruffell revealed Hannah Gadsby as the evening’s special guest to huge applause from the audience. Hannah then treated the room to a special 15-minute set addressing the importance of LGBT equality.

The comedian, who rose to fame with her Netflix comedy special, Nanette, joined other lesbian, bi and trans comedians to raise money for UK LGBT charity, Stonewall.

Now in its second year at Leicester Square’s Comedy Store, Stonewall’s Stand Up Sessions brings together the very best of the UK’s LBT comedy scene. Hosted by comedian Suzi Ruffell, and kindly sponsored by DIVA Magazine, the line-up included acts such as Jen Brister, Bethany Black, Sophie Duker.  Throughout the night, many performers spoke about the challenges faced by LBT women and the need for equality.

The evening saw performances by the following comedians:

  • Suzi Ruffell (host)
  • Hannah Gadsby
  • Bethany Black
  • Kemah Bob
  • Jen Brister
  • Sophie Duker
  • Jessica Fostekew
  • Rosie Jones
  • Jodie Mitchell
  • Chloe Petts

Suzi Ruffell, comedian and compere of the evening said: ‘Stonewall Stand Up Sessions is one of my favourite gigs of the year. Getting a group of lesbian, bi and trans comedians together is a really special moment and it’s rare that we have these chances to create that space. I feel so lucky to share the stage with such incredible comedians who are equally committed to fighting for LGBT equality. The energy and support in the room was brilliant, and to see the audience’s reaction when Hannah Gadsby came out was just incredible.’

Liz Alleston, Director of Fundraising at Stonewall, said: ’We’re incredibly grateful to Hannah Gadsby, Suzi Ruffell, and all the other fantastic lesbian, bi and trans comedians, for joining us for such a brilliant evening. It’s so rare to have a night that features a range of LBT voices and that’s what makes our Stand Up Sessions so special.

‘While we’ve come a long way towards LGBT equality, we’re still not living in a society where everyone can feel free to be themselves. Many of the acts tonight used humour to make this point and highlight that our community is strongest when we stand together. Our work continues until every lesbian, gay, bi and trans person is accepted without exception, and it’s incredible to have the support of such a diverse, talented line-up of comedians.’
