Come Out For LGBT - Fox and Owl Fisher

Owl Fisher

WRITER, FILMMAKER & NON-BINARY TRANS ACTIVIST

Fox and I do a lot of work together and are each other's allies in a lot of ways. There is still so much to do – there has been a lot more awareness recently about what it means to be a trans woman or trans man, but non-binary people still aren’t even recognised legally. We are moving in the right direction but there's still a long way to go.

They said that they might not understand everything about it, but they hope they will one  day, and they are very proud of me and what I’m doing

Recently my parents were filmed for a documentary about non-binary people in Iceland, where I was born. It was the first time I’ve seen them speak about me coming out, and being non-binary – it was emotional. They said that they might not understand everything about it, but they hope they will one day, and they are very proud of me and what I’m doing. It’s the first time I’ve heard them say that.

Equality can’t leave anyone behind.

I hope people realise that standing up for rights – not just LGBT rights but human rights in general – is just common sense, part of common decency.

It’s not enough that just one group gets what they need. Equality can’t leave anyone behind.
