A step forward for RSE in Wales

Responding to the Education Minister’s announcement, Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said: ‘Stonewall Cymru welcomes today’s announcement that all pupils in Wales will have access to Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) in the new curriculum from 2022 onwards.

‘Effective, high-quality and timely RSE is a powerful tool to equip every young person to have healthy relationships and make informed decisions about their wellbeing. The changes to RSE will help children navigate a range of issues, working towards ensuring the health and wellbeing of children in Wales. LGBT-inclusive teaching is vital to ensure that every young person see themselves and their families reflected in what they learn. It also helps make sure that every young person grows up understanding the diversity of the world and people around them.

‘As a parent myself, I am delighted with today’s news and I’d encourage other parents and communities to learn more about the Government's plans for RSE. This is not just about sex education, it’s about a more holistic approach to giving children and young people the skills, tools and information they need to grow up happy and healthy in a fast-changing world.

‘It’s now vital that the Welsh Government equips teaching professionals with the right skills and resources needed to confidently deliver inclusive RSE in Wales.’
