Leanne MacMillan, Director of International Campaigns, Stonewall UK said: ‘We’re deeply disappointed that Kenya’s high court has ruled against decriminalising same-sex relationships.
Today’s ruling is a huge blow to Kenya’s lesbian, gay, bi and trans community who have been fighting for years to repeal these laws, and we stand in solidarity with them.
‘The crushing news from Kenya is a stark reminder that global LGBT rights are under threat of going backwards. While we’ve seen good progress made recently in countries like India, there are still immense challenges facing LGBT people internationally.
Right now 70 countries still criminalise same-sex relationships and most governments continue to deny trans people the right to legal recognition of their gender identity. Our work will not be finished until lesbian, gay, bi and trans people everywhere are accepted without exception.’
