UK Aid Connect to include LGBT concerns in internationl development planning
Announcement comes after years of work by Stonewall to highlight the issue
Thousands of LGBT people to be supported and empowered
Sara Hall, Head of International Campaigns and Policy, said: ‘Around the world, lesbian, gay, bi and trans people continue to face discrimination and even persecution. Some are subjected to violence and intimidation, others do not have equal access to healthcare, education or employment. This is why this new programme is so vital.
'Stonewall has been working with the Department for International Development over the past few years to highlight how UK aid programmes often failed to help LGBT people. The Government agreed that the issue needed to be tackled, and this commitment is an important first step in ensuring that UK support never leaves LGBT people behind.
These steps will mean thousands of LGBT people are supported
‘Stonewall has also been working with many international development charities on methods that will mean their programmes meet the needs of LGBT people.
'These steps will mean thousands of LGBT people are supported to deal with the challenges they face and build better lives for themselves.’
