Lucy Clarke comes out as first openly trans referee
Lucy’s story shows the importance of visible LGBT role models in sport
Stonewall continues to call for allies to stand up for LGBT inclusion and create a more inclusive culture
Kirsty Clarke, Director of Sport, Stonewall UK said: ‘We’re really pleased Lucy Clark feels able to speak openly about her gender identity. Lucy’s story shows how just how important it is to have allies who are willing to stand up for LGBT inclusion at all levels of sport. We know from our research that attitudes in sport need to change before everyone feels free to be themselves; Lucy’s decision to speak out is part of that change.
‘She is an inspiring role model and her coming out as the first openly trans referee sends an extremely powerful message. Role models like Lucy can inspire young lesbian, gay, bi and trans people by letting them know they are not alone, can feel proud in their identity, and can help create a more inclusive culture in sport.’
