International Equality Walk

Last years fabulous Barcelona Equality Walk saw sixty supporters helped stamp out homophobic bullying by taking part in the walk.

It was the perfect chance to soak up the Spanish sun, sample the local delights and make plenty of new friends whilst raising money to support our Education for All campaign.

The weekend included two nights stay at the gorgeous Axel Hotel, a Friday night welcome party, the 10k treasure hunt and Saturday night prize giving party. Sunday was the chance to relax and unwind before heading back to the UK.

‘I loved it. I’m already putting my name down for next year!’ Richard, 2008 participant.

All participants raised at least £400 with some fantastic supporters raising nearly £2000 each. The top fundraiser reached £1800 and was presented with an exclusive trip to New York with business flights and accommodation kindly donated by British Airways and the Royalton Hotel.

So far we’ve raised £40,000 and counting!

All funds will support our Education for All campaign which aims to tackle homophobic bullying in schools. Stonewall's School Report released last year found that:

  • Almost two thirds (65 per cent) of young lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils have experienced direct bullying.
  • Ninety seven per cent of pupils hear homophobic language on a regular basis
  • Half of all bullied gay and lesbian pupils have skipped school
  • 17 per cent of those bullied have received death threats

"I am currently at home bunking my first two lessons of school. Yesterday I was verbally attacked by thirty girls calling me a dyke. I'm predicted mostly A - A*s and I am putting this at risk because of the homophobia I am experiencing. God I really don't want to go in". Hayley,15.

The next international walk will be in 2010. For more information please contact the events team on 020 7593 1874.
