We hear from thousands of young people who are being bullied just because of the way they were born. In fact, our research shows that more than half of gay young people are bullied in our schools every day – with two in five attempting or considering suicide as a direct result.
Almost all (99%) gay young people hear the phrases ‘that’s so gay’ or ‘you’re so gay’ in school and 96% hear homophobic language such as ‘poof’ or ‘lezza’. So it’s no wonder that 40% of those being bullied are harming themselves because of it.
Three in five bullied gay pupils say that teachers never intervene – even if they see the bullying taking place.
Our research, free resources and guidance help students and teachers challenge homophobic bullying and our School Champions programme provides tailored support and guidance to primary and secondary schools.
