Yet for many of us, making a will can mean so much more. It is one of the most significant ways we will ever have to support Stonewall, and in turn help other lesbians, gay men and bisexuals.
We have come so far, particularly in terms of Civil Partnerships, which was a landmark victory. This legislation has finally given us the same rights as heterosexual couples. No longer will gay partners fear the loss of their home when their loved ones die or feel the impact of unfair inheritance taxes. We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know that Stonewall remains committed to challenging homophobia and discrimination.
Many young people still face terrible homophobic abuse in schools across the country. One in four secondary school teachers say they are aware of physical homophobic bullying and four in five say they are aware of verbal bullying. The impact on young lesbians, gay men and bisexuals is devastating. Nearly half of those who have been bullied have contemplated suicide or self harm, and their education also suffers as they are more likely to leave school early. This is why Stonewall is campaigning to put a stop to this sort of abuse.
By leaving a gift in your will to Stonewall, you too can help us to plan ahead and continue our vital work of protecting future generations from the misery of homophobic abuse.
