‘We're only searching and beating up gay people, that's all’ – Indian vigilante group.
In 2013 the India’s Supreme Court re-criminalised gay sex. Since then LGBT activists report:
- A rise in hate speech
- An increase of violent attacks on the LGBT people
- An increase in the number of groups campaigning against LGBT human rights
Despite this setback in April 2014 the Indian Supreme Court recognised trans people as a third gender. LGBT activists welcomed the ruling and said it also gives them hope in their campaign against the gay-sex laws.
- We took part in the global ‘Day of Rage’ in December 2013 to support India’s LGBT activists
- We met with Indian human rights defender, Shubha Chacko, to share campaign strategies
