Policy & Research - An Overview

Stonewall’s policy and research team undertake projects that highlight and explain the experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. We do this by undertaking pioneering and ground breaking research in areas such as hate crime, health and education. We also make recommendations to help agencies such as the NHS and Criminal Justice System take steps to improve equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Britain. In summary, we:

  • Provide information and guidance
  • Conduct research
  • Work with individual organisations
  • Respond to government consultations

The work of the policy and research team covers a broad spectrum. We work across all areas which may have an impact on the lives of lesbian, gay and bisexual people and their families – from fertility to older people’s needs. We are continually developing new areas of work as issues emerge. We approach organisations and sectors to help them improve the inclusion of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. To date the work of the policy and research team has focused on a number of key areas.

Research

Stonewall provides organisations and individuals with reliable evidence both of the barriers to lesbian, gay and bisexual equality and proven solutions to help dismantle these barriers.

Stonewall regularly produces new and ground breaking research into the experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people to aid these organisations.

Stonewall’s research is available to download from our publications page

To order hard copies of our publications, please click here.

Our research programme continues to develop and expand and we are particularly keen to develop new research in partnership with organisations working in other fields. All of our research is funded by grants, sponsorship or donations. To discuss any of our publications or future research please call 08000 502020 or email info@stonewall.org.uk

Information and Guidance

The policy and research team produces information and guidance for lesbian, gay and bisexual people on their rights and how to access different services. Stonewall recognise that one of the biggest barriers to improving equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, as demonstrated by Stonewall’s Serves You Right report, is that many gay people are unaware of their rights and expect discrimination in their day-to-day lives. This has a direct impact on their ability to fully access and participate in a range of services and activities.

Stonewall’s policy and research team have produced, or been involved in the production of a number of information resources for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. These can all be downloaded from our publications page or ordered for free by clicking here

Stonewall’s policy and research team have also produced a number of guides for employers as part of Stonewall’s Workplace Programme, all of which are downloadable from our Workplace section:

Working with individual organisations

The policy and research team can offer tailored advice, as well as training, to organisations on a range of subjects and assist them in the development and implementation of policies and projects. This includes the development of single equality schemes and we are able to check individual organisation equality documents.

Consultation responses

Stonewall respond to all major public consultation exercises on issues relevant to lesbian, gay and bisexual people. However, due to limited capacity we are unable to respond to smaller scale consultation exercises outside of this tailored programme.

If you want to invite Stonewall to respond to a consultation exercise, please email info@stonewall.org.uk
