Stonewall’s policy and research team undertake projects that highlight and explain the experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. We do this by undertaking pioneering and ground breaking research in areas such as hate crime, health and education. We also make recommendations to help agencies such as the NHS and Criminal Justice System take steps to improve equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Britain. In summary, we:
The work of the policy and research team covers a broad spectrum. We work across all areas which may have an impact on the lives of lesbian, gay and bisexual people and their families – from fertility to older people’s needs. We are continually developing new areas of work as issues emerge. We approach organisations and sectors to help them improve the inclusion of lesbian, gay and bisexual people. To date the work of the policy and research team has focused on a number of key areas.

Our research programme continues to develop and expand and we are particularly keen to develop new research in partnership with organisations working in other fields. The policy and research team produces information and guidance for lesbian, gay and bisexual people on their rights and how to access different services. Stonewall recognise that one of the biggest barriers to improving equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people, as demonstrated by Stonewall’s Serves You Right report, is that many gay people are unaware of their rights and expect discrimination in their day-to-day lives. This has a direct impact on their ability to fully access and participate in a range of services and activities.

As part of Stonewall Consult the policy and research team can offer tailored advice, as well as training, to organisations on a range of subjects and assist them in the development and implementation of policies and projects. This includes the development of single equality schemes and we are able to check individual organisation equality documents.
Stonewall respond to all major public consultation exercises on issues relevant to lesbian, gay and bisexual people. However, due to limited capacity we are unable to respond to smaller scale consultation exercises outside of our Stonewall Consult programme.
