Overview

Stonewall research has indicated that some lesbian, gay and bisexual people may have difficulties accessing housing and experience homophobia and harassment in and around their homes.

Stonewall continues to work with housing providers primarily through our workplace programmes to advise them on how best to treat their employees and their service users.

What we know

Research on the experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people of housing provision is limited. More in-depth research into the housing needs and problems of lesbian, gay and bisexual people needs to be conducted.

Stonewall Cymru’s report The housing needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Wales (2006) found that common housing problems faced by lesbian, gay and bisexual people included homophobic harassment in and around the home, homelessness caused by family rejection, shared housing with homophobic individuals, the vulnerability of LGB homeless people and those in insecure housing and the poor quality of housing service provision.

Stonewall’s Homophobic Hate Crime: The Gay British Crime Survey 2008 found that lesbian and gay people are particularly vulnerable to homophobic hate incidents and crimes in and around their homes. One in six of all victims of hate crimes and incidents say the perpetrator was a neighbour or local resident. One in five lesbian victims say the perpetrator was a neighbour or local resident.

What we are doing

Stonewall are currently working with the housing sector to determine what they require to improve the experience of lesbian, gay and bisexual people accessing housing services and to help prevent the housing problems many lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience.
