Workplace Equality Index: Five Year Review

Free to enter, Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index has enabled more than 800 leading employers measure their efforts to tackle workplace discrimination and create gay-friendly workplaces. Our research experts analysed the past five years of Index data and conducted in-depth case studies with top-performing partner organisations to better understand how they approached creating a workplace culture that celebrates difference. The Workplace Equality Index: Five Year Review captures this information in a candid and concise format and would serve as an invaluable practical guide for every employer who is at the start of their journey and not quite sure where to begin.

The Review covers the following areas:

  • What is the Index?
  • Why is sexual orientation important?
  • How does the Index help employers?
  • What does the journey of top-performing employers in the Index look like?

Peak PerformancePeak Performance

This pioneering Stonewall research for the first time outlines a compelling business case for good practice around sexual orientation in the workplace. The study, based on more than one hundred in-depth interviews with lesbian, gay and bisexual people from 21 public and private sector organisations, found that participants almost universally reported a positive link between workplace climate and their own productivity and performance.

The research was sponsored by IBM.

The Double Glazed-Glass Ceiling

Employers often express concern about the small number of openly-gay women in their workplaces and the even smaller numbers engaged in their work around sexual orientation. Stonewall wanted to investigate this and that’s why we conducted this research, and the results suggest that often gay women think their gender is more of a barrier to success at work than their sexual orientation.
