All too often, service providers don't know how to meet the needs of their service users. There's a real lack of awareness, understanding and confidence in dealing with people from minority communities.
A lot of the time, people also feel unsure of what language to use, and it can be very confusing and difficult to 'get it right', even for the most well-meaning. The Good Practice Project will help address the barriers that LGBT people continue to face when using public services. We will do this by delivering the project in the following stages:
Stage 1- Gather initial information; contribute to various advisory groups; and investigate UK-wide good practice.
Stage 2 - Begin to summarise good practice; work to initiate a local authority-specific project; and develop a 'Getting Started' route map. 'Getting Started' will provide an initial tool for service providers who have yet to embark on delivering LGBT inclusive work.
Stage 3 - Develop generic good practice examples; distribute materials; and investigate impact.
Stage 4 - Develop conclusions; revise good practice advice if necessary; and stock-take of public services.
