Stonewall Scotland is working with UK film distributor Network Releasing in a unique partnership centred on the award-winning gay thriller Out in the Dark (rated 15), which opened in UK cinemas on 5 July.
After a hugely successful advanced screening and topical discussion with one of the film’s stars, Nicholas Jacob, Guardian columnist Charles Gant, and Stonewall’s International Manager Jasmine O’Connor, in London's Hackney Picturehouse, the film now comes to Scotland with screenings in Glasgow Film Theatre on 23-24 August and Eden Court Theatre in Inverness on 30-31 August.
The directorial debut from Michael Mayer stars newcomer Nicholas Jacob as Arab student Nimr alongside Michael Aloni (Policeman, Infiltration) who plays Jewish lawyer Roy. The gripping story of an Arab-Israeli gay love affair sees Nimr rejected by Islamic society for his sexuality and by Jewish society for his nationality.
Stonewall Head of Policy Sam Dick said: ‘Out in the Dark highlights the difficulties facing gay couples living in cross-cultural relationships. It provides a fantastic opportunity for us to debate the issues facing lesbian, gay and bisexual people globally and how we in Britain can help them secure gay equality in their own countries and communities.’
Tim Beddows, managing director at Network Releasing, said: ‘We’re delighted to be working with Stonewall to raise awareness of the issues in this powerful, award-winning gay thriller.’
Out in the Dark made its UK debut at the BFI London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival earlier this year and was screened as part of the Accenture Gala. The film also won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Mardi Gras Film Festival 2013.
