Equal marriage receives Royal Assent in England and Wales

Stonewall Scotland calls on MSPs to get on with making equal marriage a reality in Scotland

Moments ago the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act received Royal Assent. The Act enshrines equal marriage in law, and will lead to same-sex couples being able to marry in England and Wales.  Stonewall Scotland is now calling on MSPs to get on with making equal marriage a reality in Scotland.

Stonewall Scotland Director Colin Macfarlane said “We’re delighted that equal marriage has now received Royal Assent in England and Wales but thousands of gay Scots, their friends and their families will no doubt be frustrated that while the first marriages will likely happen in England and Wales by early next year, they are still waiting for the Scottish Bill to even be debated in the Scottish Parliament. It’s time for Scotland to get on with it and we are calling on supporters to ensure they contact their MSPs to ensure they say I do equal marriage.”
