for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality

Reaction to Scottish Social Attitudes survey 2010

Research shows 61% of Scots support equal marriage

Discrimination against gay people still evidenced

This week, the Scottish Centre for Social Research published its findings into attitudes towards discrimination.  The figures were last published in 2006.

The decline in discriminatory attitudes towards lesbian and gay people amongst the general Scottish population shown by the research is, “a step in the right direction,” according to Alan Wardle, Director of Stonewall Scotland.

“These figures are very welcome and show a substantial increase in acceptance of same sex relationships and support for marriage equality for same sex couples.   However, we’re deeply concerned that 18% of people feel that gay men and lesbians are unsuitable to be primary teachers, and 31% feel the same about transgender people.”

“The number of people who believe the opposite has gone up but it shows that work remains to be done.”

  • The report summary states, “The biggest and most rapid change in discriminatory attitudes in the last decade has been in views of gay men and lesbians.  In 2000, 48% felt sexual relationships between two adults of the same sex were always or mostly wrong.   By 2010 this figure had fallen to just over a quarter (27%).  At the same time, support for same sex marriage has increased from 41% in 2002 to 61% in 2010. While more people said a gay man or lesbian would be a suitable primary school teacher in 2010 compared with 2006 (56% compared with 48%).
