The Equality and Human Rights Commission became operational on 1st October 2007. It is the first statutory body to protect Britain's lesbian, gay and bisexual population. It was created in the Equality Act 2006 after the government decided a single equality body would be the best option for a fairer, more inclusive and more prosperous Britain.
The Commission's vision is a society built on fairness and respect where people are confident in all aspects of their diversity. The Commission aims to reduce inequality, eliminate discrimination, strengthen good relations between people and promote and protect human rights. It will enforce equality legislation on age, disability, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion and belief.
It replaced the three separate equality commissions in Great Britain, the Commission for Racial Equality, the Equal Opportunities Commission and the Disability Rights Commission, and has new powers to enforce legislation more effectively and promote equality and human rights for all.
It also gives advice and guidance to businesses, the voluntary sector and public sectors, as well as to individuals. For information and advice about your rights, contact the Scottish helpline:
