Employment

From 1 December 2003, for the first time lesbian, gay and bisexual workers are legally protected from discrimination and harassment at work. Click here to find out how your employer can improve.

However before the legal protection against discrimination in employment was introduced, many lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the UK suffered from harassment and even dismissal from employment simply because of their sexuality.

In the Discrimination section you can find out more about the extent of discrimination lesbian, gay and bisexuals workers suffered in the UK.

The Court Battles section provides an overview of the fight for justice many lesbians, gay men and bisexuals who suffered discrimination at work undertook in previous years when legislation did not provide any protection.

In the Armed Forces section you can find information about how Stonewall's campaign resulted in lesbians and gay men being allowed to serve in the armed forces.

In the New Legislation section you can find out more about new legislation which came into force on 1 December 2003 and for the first time provides legal protection for lesbian, gay and bisexual workers with the legal protection against discrimination and harassment at work.

In the Stonewall Guides to Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations you can find information on the Stonewall Conference and two guides to new employment laws.
