for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality

Workplace Equality Index

The Workplace Equality Index (WEI) is organised by Stonewall and is open to employers all over Britain. Stonewall Scotland promotes the index north of the border, providing assistance and support to Diversity Champions Scotland members who wish to enter the WEI.

The top Scottish employer in the 2012 Workplace Equality Index was Barclays. The top performing public sector organisation was the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The WEI is the definitive national benchmarking exercise, showcasing Britain’s top employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. Top employers use the Index as a key benchmarking tool, measuring their own performance in relation to competitors as well as to ensure they are delivering world class services.

  • 3.6 million lesbian and gay consumers can use the Index to decide where they want to spend their hard earned pounds
  • 1.7 million gay people in the UK workforce can use the Index to see how their organisation compares with rivals
  • 150,000 gay students in UK universities use the Index to decide which organisation they want to take their talents to upon graduation

The Index measures 7 criteria covering policy and practice — from having a non-discrimination policy promoted to all staff, that includes sexual orientation, to advertising in the pink media, and from supporting a lesbian and gay employee network group to having an openly-gay senior member of staff. It includes feedback from employees on the ground.

The Workplace Equality Index 2012 closed for submissions on 9 September 2011 and the Stonewall Top 100 Employers 2012 have now been announced in full - click here to find out more.

Criteria and guidance for the Workplace Equality Index 2013 will be published in May 2012 and the deadline for submissions will close in Septmeber 2012. To register your employer's interest in participating in the Index, please email workplace@stonewallscotland.org.uk
