| Seen/heard in: | Fit Magazine - available at Dr's surgury and hospital waiting rooms | |
| Date: | Current issue | |
| Experience: | Negative | |
| What happened: | Dept. of Health publish Fit magazine. Targetted to young men. The current issue talks about being a bloke and the benefits of exercise in becoming a babe magnet. In assuming that everyone wants to attract the opposite sex, the magazine is being heterosexist. Sub-consciously, it says that if you're not attracted to the opposite sex, you're not a real bloke. A really damaging message to young gay men. | |
| Action taken: | I raised my concerns by speaking to my local health authority, health department and publishers. | |
| Response: | They were really appreciative of my comments (no-one else had complained), and will take them on board for future issues. |

| What happened: | Charley upset Jerry (and myself) by implying he slept with 15 year old boys; a feeling I know too well as I have been on the end of that small minded stereotype too. The thing that has now made me even angrier is that she is still in the house and no action has been taken. When Jade was racist, even though she claims it wasn't intentional and also when Emily called Charley a nigger and she didn’t mean it, they were both slated and reprimanded and kicked out. Charley made here remark with intention and malice yet she is still in there and nothing has been done or said. That says to me that Channel 4 thinks it's OK to bring gay people's social and even legal standing into question but calling people names is wrong. The only conclusion I can draw from this is that ratings are more important to them than values. Also ironic considering they are running a week of programs about gays and their struggle to be equal and shed prejudice. |
|
| Action taken: | I have contacted Channel 4 with 4 phone message and 3 emails, Stonewall, Ofcom and Outrage. | |
| Response: | Only response I have had was from Stonewall. Almost a week later and no one else has bothered. I guess gays just aren't that important then compared to others. |

| What happened: | In an interview with Radio 4 Gloria Gaynor was asked about her very substantial gay following. She said that she wanted to lead gay people to Christ (Gloria became a born again Christian some years ago and wants everyone to see the light). When asked if she thought that what gay people were doing was wrong she hesitated and then wouldn't say. She simply repeated her wish to lead to gay people to Christ. | |
| Action taken: | I can't fault radio 4 since they were simply interviewing the woman but I thought it was worth posting Gloria's views on this website. Prior to this interview I was of the opinion that Gloria was a feminist and a supporter of gay rights simply because of her songs but seems I was wrong on both counts. | |

| Seen/heard in: | Look Away Now - BBC Radio 4 | |
| Date: | 17 May 2007 | |
| Experience: | Negative | |
| What happened: | Comedy sketch show about sport included a spoof interview with a gay premiership footballer played by Alan Carr. | |
| Action taken: | I made the following complaint to the BBC: I listened to the repeat of Look Away Now, which I think was originally broadcast on 17 May, but I can't find the time of the repeat on your website. I think the show has some funny sketches, especially the Jose Mourinho ones, but I'm afraid to say I was shocked by one of the sketches in this episode. The sketch where Gary Richardson interviewed a supposedly gay footballer was actually very offensive to the degree that it was homophobic. The premise of the humour in the sketch was the apparent absurdity that a footballer should be gay and that, effectively, homosexuality had no place in football - that gay men could not be trusted in all-male environments and that they are always making unwelcome sexual advances to straight men. Do you really think this is acceptable? Even in the context of the show's gentle prods at women in sport and foreigners in sport, this stands out because it took a stereotype of a gay man (a stereotype less evolved that say Julian and Sandy from Round the Horne) and underlined why he had no place in football. Why do you think there are no out gay footballers? Not because of Radio 4 comedy programmes admittedly, but because of the attitudes reflected in this sketch, which it neither sought to move on nor challenge as it might have done - and perhaps it would have been funnier if it had. Hearing this has undermined what I think of Gary Richardson (where was the humour, or indeed judgement in his 'gay denial' towards the end of the sketch?) and of Radio 4 comedy. I like some of it, I don't like some of it, but I've never complained before. Please let me know how you justify this sketch. |
|
| Response: | "I'm sorry that this item on 'Look Away Now' offended you. Alan Carr who wrote quite a lot of the sketch and performed it is a gay comedian and we were guided by Alan as to what he thought was funny and acceptable. If we over stepped the mark and caused unnecessary offence then I really am sorry. We did not set out to do that but allow Alan to perform in the manner he's known for but to put him inside a completely fictitious character. I hope we have not put you off listening to Radio 4 comedies again in the future." |
