A message from Ruth Hunt, Acting Chief Executive

Last week, after 11 remarkable years as Chief Executive, we said a fond farewell to Ben Summerskill. Ben’s vision, tenacity, determination and unwavering commitment to ending inequality means that Britain is now a very different place for lesbian, gay and bisexual people than it was eleven years ago. He will be missed by all of us at Stonewall and we wish him the very best for the future.

Ben knew better than anyone that changing laws only takes us so far. At Stonewall, we know from the 8,000 queries we receive to our information line, our extensive research and your experiences - which you share with us via Twitter and Facebook – that our work is by no means done.

Gay people still fear taunts and physical abuse on the streets of our towns and cities because they have the audacity to hold the hand of the person they love.

Lesbians are still ostracised and isolated because we don’t always act, dress or love how some would like us to.

Bisexual people are still erased and ridiculed – by gay and straight people – simply because of who they fall in love with.

And around the world lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are harassed, imprisoned and attacked simply for how they were born.

I know that, in Stonewall’s 25th anniversary year, so much work remains to be done and that equality will only be won with the support of thousands of activists, community groups, volunteers and supporters playing their part. We want to help you do just that.

Keep telling us what you need us to do. We’re listening. You can reach me on twitter at @Ruth_Hunt.
