New polling shows more than nine in ten gay people support equal marriage

Evidence undermines claim that reform ‘isn’t a priority’ for gay people

IDOA new YouGov poll commissioned for Stonewall shows nine in ten (91 per cent) of Britain’s 3.7 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people support equal marriage. The poll of over 2,000 lesbian, gay and bisexual adults across Britain also found support rises to 96 per cent of gay people aged 35 or under.

Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill said: ‘Some regrettably shrill anti-gay campaigners have taken to suggesting gay people aren’t really that bothered about equal marriage. We now know just how important this reform is for millions of people in this country.

‘Added to other polls showing overwhelming support for equal marriage from gay and straight people alike, this exposes the hollowness of one of the main claims made by anti-equality campaigners.’

In December an Ipsos MORI poll showed 73 per cent of all people in Britain think gay people should be able to marry. Similarly, a YouGov poll for Stonewall’s Living Together report last year found 71 per cent of all people in Britain support government plans to introduce equal marriage, rising to over 80 per cent of people aged 18-50.

MPs will vote on equal marriage next Tuesday (5 February) when the House of Commons considers the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill. Stonewall is calling on supporters of the reform to contact their MPs before the debate to ask for their vote.

YouGov polled 2,092 lesbian, gay and bisexual people in England, Scotland and Wales between 5 and 22 October 2012. Respondents were asked to state to what extent they supported or opposed the following: The Government intends to extend the legal form and name of civil marriage to same-sex couples.
