Commenting on the case of Jules Mattsson who was called ‘stupid and gay’ by a Metropolitan Police Inspector, Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of Stonewall said ‘It is a matter of grave concern that even now Metropolitan Police officers feel emboldened to use homophobic language like this. It further damages the confidence in the Metropolitan Police’s ability to protect the gay community in London.’
YouGov polling for Stonewall has clearly shown that one in five lesbian, gay and bisexual people in London have experienced a homophobic incident or crime in the last three years. However, three quarters of victims did not report the homophobic incident to the Metropolitan police, a third because they didn’t think they would take it seriously.
