Schools minister Nick Gibb joins Gok Wan at Stonewall Education Conference

Minister of State for Schools Nick Gibb will join TV presenter Gok Wan as keynote speaker at Stonewall’s annual Education for All Conference at the British Library on 1 July 2011.

Also speaking at the event are Sue Gregory, National Director of Inspection Delivery at Ofsted and Roger Crouch, whose 15 year-old son Dominic took his own life in 2010.

Nick Gibb said: ‘I’m delighted to be speaking at Stonewall’s Education for All conference. The Coalition Government has committed to tackling all forms of bullying in the Schools White Paper – and tackling homophobic bullying must be a top priority. I’m determined that the Department for Education will work with Stonewall to help tackle and prevent homophobic bullying so that all lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils can reach their full potential at school and learn in a safe and stress-free environment.’

Alastair Tallon, Stonewall’s Education Director, said: ‘The education system is changing, but the Schools White Paper has made clear that combating homophobic bullying remains a top priority. This year's conference has been designed to show education and youth professionals how to use these changes to help their work against homophobic bullying.’

For the first time, this year’s conference features a teacher training programme specifically for school staff. The programme includes interactive workshops led by experts in the field on tackling homophobic bullying in the classroom.

Practical tips will be on offer on implementing the new public duty requiring all education and youth professionals to proactively consider the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people and promote equality. The event also gives delegates an exclusive viewing of Stonewall’s new primary school teacher-training DVD.

Delegates will also learn which local authority has topped the first Stonewall Education Equality Index, which benchmarks good policy and practise on sexual orientation issues in schools. The winner will be announced by Gok Wan, and receive the award from the Minister.
