Gok Wan

TV presenter Gok Wan and Schools Minister Nick Gibb will deliver keynote speeches at Stonewall’s annual Education for All Conference at the British Library on 1 July 2011. Education sector leaders including Sue Gregory, National Director of Inspection Delivery at Ofsted will also be speaking at the event, aimed at all education and youth professionals.

Gok Wan said: ‘I’m delighted to be speaking at Stonewall’s Education for All Conference. This is an issue very close to my heart, having experienced homophobic bullying myself. By sharing my experience of overcoming this, I really hope I can help schools to tackle this massive problem so that young people can be totally confident about who they are.’

Alastair Tallon, Stonewall’s Education Director, said: ‘The education system is changing, but the Schools White Paper has made clear that combating homophobic bullying remains a top priority. This year's conference has been designed to show education and youth professionals how to use these changes to help their work against homophobic bullying.’

For the first time this year, there will be a teacher training programme at the conference specifically for school staff including interactive workshops led by experts in the field on tackling homophobic bullying in the classroom.

The event will feature an exclusive viewing of Stonewall’s new primary school teacher training DVD and practical tips will be given on implementing the new public duty which requires all education and youth professionals to proactively consider the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people and promote equality.
