Everyone at Stonewall is deeply saddened to hear of Antony’s death. He was a real titan of the struggle for gay equality and we know that everything that we’ve been able to do in the last 20 year has only been possible because of the heroism of people like him half a century ago.
Antony was Secretary of the Homosexual Law Reform Society from 1962 spearheading its campaign to implement the 1957 Wolfenden Report which culminated in the 1967 Sexual Offences Act. He continued his working for better laws and social attitudes during the 1970s and 80s and was active in the British Association for Counselling. Antony was voted ‘Hero of the Year’ at the 2007 Stonewall Awards.
Our thoughts are with his partner and many friends.
We should all be deeply appreciative of Antony's courageous and dedicated work in campaigning for our rights. I vividly remember having to live a life of pretence in my younger years because of the then prevailing law and social attitudes. We owe so much to all those who have struggled and continue to struggle for our rights in order to attain full equality. My heartfelt condolences go to Antony's partner and friends.
