Winners and runners up of Stonewall's film clip competition

The winning entry for Stonewall’s film clip competition was screened at the Lesbian and Gay Film Festival this week at the BFI Southbank, along with the two runners up.

Stonewall’s annual film clip competition invites young people aged 16 – 21 to produce a 3-minute film clip with a positive message against homophobic bullying.

Entries from across the country were short-listed by a panel of judges including Bend it Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha, Bad girls, Footballer’s Wives and Waterloo Road creator Maureen Chadwick and Jamie, an 18-year-old Stonewall Youth Volunteer.

The winning entry, Missed Opportunities, was submitted by a group of six students from The Harris Academy at Peckham. 18-year-old Richard Rumble said: ‘I’ve witnessed homophobic bullying in school, and was so happy to be involved in this creative process. We tried to come up with a non-stereotypical way of raising awareness and tackling this important issue.’

The students have won the chance to star as supporting artists in the prime time TV series Waterloo Road, plus a behind the scenes tour and meet and greet with the cast.

Their winning clip used CCTV style shots and short subtitles to tell the bullying diary of a young student who is perceived as being gay. The judges praised the film clip for showing how important it is to intervene in the first instance when homophobic bullying takes place, rather than allow it to escalate.

Stonewall’s film clip competition, now in its second year, is part of the Stonewall Youth Volunteering Programme, supported by V. It provides young people with the opportunity to make their anti-homophobia messages heard across the country.
