Stonewall's Annual 10k Equality Walk takes place on Bank Holiday Sunday May 2, starting at Brighton's Pavilion Gardens. This year's walk is building on the success of the 2009 walk which attracted over 400 walkers. Supported by American Express the seventh annual walk is in aid of Stonewall’s work to stamp out homophobic bullying in schools.
Registration for the walk is just £10, and all walkers will receive a goody bag and special edition t-shirt, and can enjoy entertainment put on for them throughout the day. Participants simply need to raise more than the registration fee with prizes for the top fundraising individuals and groups.
Once registered, Stonewall encourages all walkers to fundraise to support the campaign to end homophobic bullying in schools. This year there’s a fantastic top fundraising prize - a luxury weekend for two in Paris including business-class travel on Eurostar, two nights' stay in a luxury hotel and £500 spending money, courtesy of American Express.
With a route winding through the heart of the city, walkers will be supporting Stonewall's continuing work into tackling homophobic bullying. Research shows that nine in ten secondary school teachers say children and young people, regardless of their sexual orientation, currently experience this type of bullying in the form of name calling or harassment in their schools. In addition, nine in ten teachers at secondary and primary schools report that they have never received any specific training on how to prevent and respond to homophobic bullying.
This year Stonewall’s sent FIT – an anti-bullying DVD – and teaching materials to every secondary school in Britain and is expanding the programme in 2010. Last year's walk raised over £50,000 towards the production of the FIT DVD, described as ‘a gritty take on the shiny E4 drama Glee’ by the Times. A special screening of 'FIT' is being held for all Equality Walk registrants in Brighton on Thursday March 11.
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said: 'The Brighton Equality Walk has always been a key event in Stonewall's fundraising calendar. This year we’re continuing our focus on stamping out homophobic bullying in schools, the second most frequent form of bullying in our schools, according to secondary school teachers.’
