Celebrities and walkers join forces to stamp out hate-crime

Stonewall's fifth Equality Walk in Brighton saw a turn out of over 300 supporters on Sunday 4th May.

Celebrity supporters included Amy Lamé and Dicky and Dolly, (ex - Big Brother stars Richard and Lea, now hosts of Gaydar Radio), who cheered walkers on and hosted the post-walk party at Legends. The 10k sponsored walk around Brighton, generously sponsored by American Express, was opened by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Carol Theobald. The route, set by the Brighton-based lesbian and gay sports group BLAGSS, took walkers along the sea-front, through Brighton's gay village and ended with a prize-giving ceremony for the top fundraisers.

The walk raised £32,000 towards Stonewall's campaign to ensure anti-gay hate crimes are reported with more confidence, and eventually stamped out altogether.

Ben Summerskill, Stonewall chief executive, said: 'It was heartening to see hundreds of supporters out in force, helping Stonewall to up the ante on our ongoing campaign to put an end to homophobic hate-crimes. This fun day is a great way of increasing the visibility of the gay and lesbian community in Brighton and standing firmly together on the issues that really matter to all lesbian and gay people across the country.'
