Young people celebrate Stonewall's first Gay Youth Event
Stonewall’s first Gay Youth Event, held on Saturday 9 June, attracted almost 100 participants from around the country.
The event was held at London ’s City Hall and sponsored by Norwich Union and the Greater London Authority. It offered practical help about being gay in 21st century through a mix of inspirational speakers and workshops.
Practical workshops included How to Interview Well, Turning Being Gay into an Advantage, Going Back to School and College and Knowing Your Rights at Work. Successful lesbians and gay men shared their experiences with participants too.
Young people travelled from Wigan, Hull, Cambridge and Bristolto be at the event. Ninety eight per cent of those who attended said the event had been ‘very good’ or ‘good’ at helping them develop personal and practical skills they need.
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive, said: “The Gay Youth Event was all about making the most out of being gay in Britain today. We want all young people to grow up to secure every single ounce of their potential. This programme was designed to help unlock that potential.”
The Gay Youth Event was free and open to young people aged 16-21 who are lesbian, gay or bisexual, or think they might be, whether at school or college, working, or still deciding what to do after school.
