Environment Agency Wales named top Welsh employer 2013

One in ten of Stonewall’s Top 100 gay friendly employers are Welsh

Tenth anniversary of key legal change protecting gay workers

Stonewall today publishes its Top 100 Employers 2013, showcasing Britain's best employers for gay staff, featuring 11 Welsh employers.

For the fifth year running it names Environment Agency Wales as the top Welsh employer for gay people.  The second best placed Welsh employer is Lloyds Banking Group and North Wales Police came third.

Full results of the 2013 Stonewall Top Employers list will be announced at a ceremony held tonight (January 16) in London hosted by Aviva.  A celebration of the success of Welsh employers takes place on 24 January at the Pierhead, Cardiff Bay sponsored by Rosemary Butler AM.

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru said: “During the past decade Welsh employers have come a long way and it is particularly heartening that once again they represent such a healthy proportion of the Top 100, and that they continue to focus on making a real difference to people’s working lives.  “

“In 2003 one in four respondents to our first ever research reported having being dismissed from their job because of their sexual orientation.  In marking our 10th anniversary in Wales and a decade since the introduction of employment protections for gay people, we are delighted at the changes we’ve witnessed during this time. However we’re acutely aware though of  the amount of work still to be done to make sure that Wales’ 114,000 lesbian, gay and bisexual employees can be themselves and perform better as a result.”

Chris Mills, Director, Environment Agency Wales said: “We are very proud to be named top employer in Wales for the fifth year in a row. This is testament to the work of our LGBT network and the attitude of all our staff.”

“By making sure our staff feel comfortable and confident to be themselves in the workplace results in a happier and more productive workforce.”

“I am honoured that we have been recognised by Stonewall Cymru for this achievement.”

The Index is based on a range of key indicators which include a confidential survey of lesbian, gay and bisexual employees, with nearly 9,000 participants. This consistently revealed that the satisfaction levels of gay staff were highest at the top-ranking organisations in the Index.
