Coronation Street star and father-of-two Charlie Condou has joined Stonewall Cymru to launch a social media competition to celebrate Fathers’ Day. Stonewall’s ‘Thanks, Dad!’ competition launches today, and asks lesbian, gay and bisexual people and their dads to share positive stories about fatherhood. The competition closes on Father’s Day, 17 June, when one entry will win VIP tickets for the 2012 Iris Prize International Film Festival.
Entries must be made by YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, using the hashtag #ThanksDad. The competition’s rules are on Stonewall’s website. From today until 16 June, each day one entry will win a ‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ t-shirt. On Father’s Day Charlie Condou and Stonewall Cymru Director Andrew White will select the overall winner.
Charlie Condou said: ‘Until recently many gay men will have grown up thinking fatherhood was something they’d never experience. As a dad of two young kids, I know that parenting is parenting, regardless of sexuality. I love being a dad, and I'm immensely grateful that today nobody has to feel like the door to family life is closed to them.’
Andrew White said: ‘Supportive parents give young people the best start in life. That’s why Stonewall has campaigned so hard to make sure mums and dads are afforded real dignity and respect whatever their sexual orientation.’
Stonewall’s Guide for Gay Dads provides practical advice for gay couples who wish to bring up children. The charity plans to launch a campaign to celebrate mums before Mothering Sunday next year.
