Environment Agency Wales named top Welsh employer on Stonewall's 2011 list

Staff satisfaction levels highest at top ranking organisations

Biggest ever survey of gay employees

On the 12th January 2011 Stonewall published its Top 100 Employers 2011, showcasing Britain's best employers for gay staff.

It names Environment Agency as the best place to work in Wales for lesbian, gay and bisexual people in 2011. In second place is North Wales Police and Cardiff County Council comes third.

The Home Office secured the overall top position as the most gay-friendly employer in Britain, with Lloyds Banking Group named as the private sector employer of the year. This is the first year that a central government department has secured the top position in the index.

The Index is based on a range of key indicators including the largest ever survey of lesbian, gay and bisexual employees, with over 9,100 participants – an increase of almost 3,000.  Staff satisfaction levels were highest at the top ranking organisations in the Index. The average staff satisfaction in the Top 25 was 13 per cent higher than for organisations outside the Top 100.

In total, nine welsh organisations have also been named in Stonewall’s 2011 Top 100 Employers list.  These include Cardiff University and Dyfed-Powys Police who both entered the Top 100 for the first time.

‘Competition was fiercer than ever to secure a place on the 2011 list' says Andrew White, Stonewall Cymru Director. ‘We received more entries than any previous year from employers who understand that people perform better when they can be themselves.  Stonewall’s research has found that gay people are far more likely to buy goods or services from companies they know are gay-friendly. The Index is a powerful tool used by Britain's 1.7 million gay employees and 150,000 gay university students to decide where to take their talent and skills.’

Chris Mills, Director, Environment Agency Wales, said:

"I'm very proud that we have been named top employer in Wales for the third year in a row.  I believe that our staff achieve more for the environment in Wales when they feel they can be themselves in the workplace and can do their best.  Having this recognised by Stonewall Cymru is a testament to the inclusive approach our staff take to working together and with other people."
