Stonewall Cymru¹ will be hosting a meeting on Friday 5 August, 12-1pm at the National Eisteddfod Sbardun Pavillion, on the subject of tackling homophobic bullying in Wales' schools.
The aim of the 'Education for All' campaign is to ensure all young lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people can fulfil their potential free from verbal or physical abuse. Recent research shows in England and Wales found 82% of teachers were aware of verbal incidents and 26% aware of physical incidents. Almost all schools had anti-bullying policies but only 6% of schools in England Wales mention this form of bullying in their anti-bullying policies. The extent of bullying in Wales' schools is not known as it has not been researched
Dr Alison Parken, Director of Stonewall Cymru, said, 'It is appropriate that we host a meeting at Wales' premier cultural festival and talk about the particular ways that homophobic bullying manifests itself in Welsh culture and language'.
Dr Parken added, 'There are very few places young LGB people can go to for advice and support when they are bullied. Childline and EACH² provide help but I am not aware of anti-bullying helpline or advice services that help young people in the medium of Welsh. Extremely distressing situations can be made worse by an inability to express how bullying is affecting you if you can not do it in your own language. This meeting highlights the issues, calls for more research in Wales and give us an opportunity to discuss appropriate materials to encourage schools to tackle bullying in the medium of Welsh'.
Interviews are available from 9am Friday morning. Please contact Jenny Porter on 07958137350 to organise interviews with John Sam Jones, Schools Advisor for PSE Denbighshire County Council & Chair of All Wales PSE County Advisors also former Chair of LGB Forum aka Stonewall Cymru or/and Dafydd Frayling Stonewall Cymru Council member & Officer for Triangle Helpline and founder member of Cylch group for Welsh speaking LGB people in the 80's.
