Environment Agency Wales named most gay-friendly employer in Wales

Stonewall has published its Top 100 Employers of 2009, showcasing some of Wales best employers for gay staff.  The annual Workplace Equality Index sees five organisations from Wales in the Top 100.
Environment Agency Wales are named the top employer in Wales, followed by North Wales Police, Welsh Assembly Government, National Assembly for Wales Commission and Gwent Police.
The Index is based on a range of key indicators which this year included the largest ever survey of lesbian and gay employees, with almost 7,000 participants.  This consistently revealed staff satisfaction levels were highest at the top ranking organisations in the Index.  Staff were also more likely to disclose their sexual orientation in monitoring exercises at the highest ranking organisations.
Liz Morgan, Director of Stonewall Cymru, said:
"This year the standard of entry was the highest to date.  More Welsh employers feature in the Top 100 than ever before, proving their commitment to diversity in the workplace".
Environment Agency Wales Director, Chris Mills said:
I am delighted to hear that Environment Agency Wales is now first amongst Welsh employers in the Stonewall Equality Index.  This achievement demonstrates the value we place on working together with our staff to create a better workplace".
North Wales Police Assistant Chief Constable, Ian Shannon said:
"North Wales Police is committed to ensuring that all communities in North Wales receive a fair and equitable Policing service.  This demonstrates our commitment to the communities we serve.  I am determined to ensure that LGB people who live in, work or visit North Wales can feel secure and see North Wales Police as an employer of choice."
Employers were ranked according to criteria ranging from implementation of an effective equality policy to demonstrating how they engage with their lesbian and gay staff and customers and service users. The Index assesses actual practice, such as recruitment and mentoring activity, as well as policy.
Liz Morgan added:
"We are delighted that the top 5 gay-friendly employers in Wales are all members of Stonewall Cymru's Diversity Champions good practice programme. We hope other organisations in Wales will follow their example in working with Stonewall Cymru and the Diversity Champions programme".
