In early 2008 Stonewall Cymru undertook a LGB Project in Merthyr. The Project focused on developing the confidence of local LGB people to establish their own group, and raise awareness of the issues for LGB living in Merthyr area. It was funded under the Communities First Mainstreaming Equality and Diversity Fund (in operation in 2007/08) and was developed in partnership with the Merthyr Tydfil Council Community Safety Partnership and the Merthyr Tydfil Multi-Agency Diversity Forum.
Three small-scale meetings were held for LGB people to meet and identify issues of importance followed by a Speak-Easy event for representatives of Merthyr Tydfil's community safety and public services to receive information on the legislation related to Sexual Orientation and being a 'gay-friendly' organisation and participate in a facilitated discussion on working with LGB people to address their community safety issues.
The establishment of a Merthyr LGB Group was identified as essential to developing a LGB 'community' in the area, as described by the new Chair of the Merthyr Tydfil LGB Group:
"The Group will help make a difference to the LGB community by promoting the group's interests; acting as an information access point, social networking and peer resource; provide a safe opportunity for matters of concern to be expressed and discussed; provide a safe avenue for homophobic experiences be reported to South Wales Police and Hate Crime Officers; allow a positive view of LGB people be seen to counteract stereotyping and liaise with other LGB groups in the area.
The Merthyr Tydfil LGB Group will help make a difference to those who may feel isolated and alone to be integrated into the gay community. It will allow the gay community to have an active integrative presence in the area giving the group and community the recognition it deserves."
