This section contains details of resources which raise awareness of the issues facing older and young people. This includes resources which explore issues facing older LGBT people and young LGBT people, as well as useful general information. Resources for older LGBT people  Planning for later life as a lesbian, gay man, bisexual or transgendered person - Age Concern 2003 This information sheet provides information for older lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people and those planning for later life, as well as people who wish to offer support. "Opening Doors. Working with older lesbians and gay men" - Age Concern (England) 2001 This resource pack is intended for any individual or organisation interested in developing services for, or working with, older lesbians and gay men. Opening Doors is part of a wider and still developing strategy, which also includes training, networking and international work, both within Europe and further afield. "Opening doors … to the needs of older lesbians, gay men and bisexuals" – Age Concern England 2002 The report of the Opening Doors conference details the key points made and conclusions and recommendations for work with older lesbian, gay and bisexual people. "Outing Age - Public Policy Issues Affecting Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders" - National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce (US) 2000 This report explores the key issues facing older LGBT people in the US, including public health, long-term care and housing. "Age Discrimination in Public Policy. A Review of Evidence" - Help the Aged 2002 This document discovers clear evidence of direct age discrimination in our national institutions and explores the profound impact of indirect discrimination on older people themselves and on society as a whole. "AgeToday - research, information and comment on older people's issues" - Help the Aged A quarterly briefing magazine that provides an essential reference for anyone with an interest in improving the circumstances of older people across the UK. Each issue will focus on a specific theme relevant to older people, eg crime, social inclusion, volunteering, mobility and transport, and feature a digest of research findings together with comments by older people themselves. Age Concern Factsheets Age Concern produces over 40 comprehensive factsheets designed to answer many of the questions older people - or those advising them - may have. Resources for young LGBT people Information and Guidance on Engaging Young Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People - Connexions 2003 This guidance aims to provide all those working in Connexions with information and guidance on many of the issues facing young lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Making Visible the Invisible - The Experience and Needs of Sandwell's Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Young People 2002 This research confirmed many of the findings in the wider literature field concerning the issue and needs of young lesbian, gay and bisexual people. The young people reported experiences that led to feelings of isolation, having a lack of support, a need for information about lesbian, gay and bisexual lifestyles, and a request for more awareness and acceptance of their 'different' sexualities. They reported difficult experiences at school, and a need for local service providers to address their specific needs. These young people's experiences and issues often reflect or result from disadvantage, discrimination and oppression. "Something to Tell You" - Nicky Coia, Sue John, Fiona Dobbie, Shona Bruce, Margaret McGranachan, Lucy Simmons 2002 "Something To Tell You" is the report of a health needs assessment of young gay, lesbian and bisexual people in Glasgow. "Safe for All - A best practice guide to prevent homophobic bullying in secondry schools" - Ian Warwick, Nicola Douglas 2001 This guide offers suggestions and ideas about steps that can be taken to challenge homophobic bullying in schools. "A Beginner's Guide to Being Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual" - Peer Support Project This booklet explores some of the issues for young people who think that they might be lesbian, gay or bisexual. A helpful resource that explores some important issues around coming out. "Resource Guide to Coming Out" - Human Rights Campaign (US) This useful resource explores issues around coming out, self-esteem and sexual identity. Although produced for a US audience (many of the resources and organisations are US based), the resource is still extremely helpful and covers all aspects of coming out. "How Do I Tell My Parents?" - FFLAG 2000 This booklet offers a supportive approach to sons and daughters (of any age) who want to come out. "A Guide For Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays" - FFLAG 2000 A must-read for parents who are forming new and honest relationships with a son or daughter who has come out "Young Citizen's Passport (8th Edition)" - Citizenship Foundation 2003 The popular guide to the law for young people has been re-designed, updated and extended to contain a new section on Europe. It is ideal for many uses, such as a resource for staff involved in delivering citizenship education, a classroom resource and a practical guide for school leavers. Mermaids Mermaids is a group which offers support to transgender young people and their families. Their website contains useful information, including personal stories shared by transgender young people. "Hidden in Plain Sight: Homelessness amongst lesbian and gay youth" - William O'Connor, Donna Molloy This report presents the findings of research carried out by the National Centre for Social Research and Stoewall Housing Association into young lesbian and gay men's experiences of homelessness. "Out and About" - Terrence Higgins Trust, 2003 This booklet is for young men under 18 who think they might be gay or bisexual. Designed with professionals in mind (teachers, school counsellors, youth workers), this accessible and non-explicit resource covers common anxieties that young gay or bisexual men may face such as telling people, meeting others, sexual health and where to go for support. Young Gay Men Talking - Avert This booklet has been updated recently and features accounts from young gay men, including their coming to terms with their sexuality, coming out, and their experiences of talking about their feelings with friends and parents, as well as their expectations, concerns, and the realities of relationships with other gay men. Talking About Homosexuality in the Secondary School - Avert 1997 This book is a practical resource which explores ways to help secondary schools to tackle issues around sexuality.
