Many advances in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the UK are direct results of developments on the European level. Legalisation of sex between men in Northern Ireland, equalisation of the age of consent, lifting the ban on lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the military, first ever anti-discrimination legislation specifically banning discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and the new (and soon to be law) gender recognition legislation allowing transsexual people to register and marry in their true gender - just a few fundamental victories for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people that have been won on the European level. |
