At Stonewall we're truly proud when our efforts help secure legal changes that bring equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people closer. But we also recognise that once a law is changed, there's a need to let people know about their new rights and how to use them.

So we were pleased to launch our new guide for lesbians and bisexual women on all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth from conception to starting school.

Following historic changes in the new Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act which come into effect this year the guide helps gay women understand the legal framework in an accessible way and tells them everything they need to know about conceiving.

It's the latest in a programme of recent work for lesbians and bisexual women undertaken by Stonewall - including groundbreaking research on lesbian health and our study on the experiences of lesbians at work.

We look forward now to the start of October, when the 'need for a father' rule that’s been a barrier to so many lesbian couples accessing conception services will also become history.

Pregnant Pause

My partner plans to get pregnant at the beginning of 2011 using a known donor, this publication has answered so many questions, I haven't been able to put it down!! It's clear, and goes through the whole process giving clear information, I think its great! A big thankyou to Stonewall

i think it's great that you're giving women hoping to be parents this guide. i know when my mums were doing all this in 1991/2 there wasn't nearly as much information out there. i also think it would be a good idea to get the perspectives of some of the children of gay parents (like me!), and our advice on how to make having gay parents easiest for us. there's a brilliant USA based organisation called COLAGE (Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere) which could give some advice...
